In 2023 I wrote about the Current Body LED Hair Growth device after suffering hair loss after having Covid. Ideally, I want to forget about those lost years because I was so unwell and still, to this day, think I am not quite the same. In fact, when I talk to friends and family about it, they also say they don’t feel they have ever bounced back to their pre-Covid selves.
Watching my hair disappear down the plug hole was frightening. At first, I didn’t take much notice – I know that hair has natural falls from time to time but this went on and on. I was fine to begin with – I had a lot of hair so could be practical and realise I could lose quite a lot before it became noticeable but as time progressed I got more and more worried – the amount that came off my brush every morning was shocking. I just didn’t know when – or if – it would stop.

Unhappy hair and scalp post Covid
I really was the ideal candidate for the Current Body LED Hair Growth Device when it was brand new and I did a lot of research at the time, testing for a full four months which is when any results would become apparent. What I learned then, and is just as relevant now, is that the red light spectrum is crucial. 620-660nm is the golden zone where hair follicles can be energised, inflammation reduced, blow flow improved and DHT levels lowered.

My ‘glow up’!
The most common types of hair loss are androgenetic alopecia and telogen effluvium (mine) – they have several differences but a common thread is that in both, red light therapy has been found to increase microcirculation, stimulate cell metabolism and provide antioxidant support to scalp tissue. Androgenic hair loss is pattern loss – you might hear it termed ‘male pattern baldness’ but it’s common amongst women too. Please note that ‘proven’ result studies have mostly been conducted on androgenic loss but boosting circulation and cell metabolism can benefit both. Claims with the CurrentBody LED Hair Regrowth Device is that it targets receding hairlines, hair thinning and pattern balding through keeping hair in its active growth stage. At the same time, red light can stimulate natural molecules that relax the blood vessels in increase circulation, which in turn floods the follicles with nutrients and oxygen. These things are equally vital to PCOS or post-partum hair loss – the latter of which is a common issue caused by a sudden drop in estrogen levels after pregnancy is over, causing hairs which were in the growth phase to enter the shedding phase. I must admit that I don’t remember having this with either of my children or maybe I was just too tired to notice!

Growth coming though – a lot of greys!
The helmet’s capabilities are more streamlined to use with two sizes available now – I was lucky that the one size there was originally was a perfect fit – the benefits of a whole head helmet are that every follicle is targeted, activating more follicles compared to laser hair growth treatments. It was amazing how quickly my family got completely used to seeing me with a glowing red head! After using every day for three months, I could see signs of new hair growth – I can’t tell you whether this would have happened anyway because it’s just impossible to say and I do need to point out that while independent study finds that some women with androgenic hair loss receiving LED red light therapy saw a 51% increase in hair, it doesn’t work for absolutely everyone. Hair loss is a very emotive topic and I don’t want to guide anyone down the wrong path, but do want to give you the realistic results that happened to me. I subsequently lent the helmet to a friend and she too felt she had new and visible growth (I saw it myself).

My hair now
As the Current Body LED Hair Growth Device is expensive, I’ve had a look at how the home device compares to clinic treatments and it’s quite a shock. Some clinics are charging £150 per session depending upon the location, the size of the area you are treating (I couldn’t find out whether ‘head’ is a whole area or whether it’s divided into sections) and the number of sessions you need to take. Personally, I’d take the home device every time especially as technology has made it so effective – it’s not just a time and effort saver but a money saver too. Two years later, my hair isn’t back to its pre-Covid fullness but it’s perfectly fine – it’s not noticeable in any way that I ever had loss and in truth, it’s much easier to manage. There was a time when I vowed never to have any further hair colouring just in case, but here I am with full on bleach! The Current Body LED Hair Regrowth Device helped me feel more empowered in dealing with my hair loss rather than just sitting there worrying and feeling helpless. I had growth during the time I used it – easily visible because the hairs are grey – and would not take back the time and effort I put into using it.
